Hangaku Gozen was a renowned Onna-bugeisha who was famous for her bravery and valor. She was considered to be as skilled in combat as Tomoe Gozen, and her abilities were even greater than those of her father and older brother. She was an enigmatic figure who was widely recognized in both history and literature. In addition to her combat skills, Hangaku Gozen played a key role in determining war strategies. She commanded a force of 3,000 soldiers during wartime, exhibiting exceptional leadership on the battlefield. She is one of the few Japanese warrior women who left an enduring mark on history.
Hangaku Gozen was both fearless and beautiful and excelled in wielding the naginata, a traditional Japanese sword. History books describe a striking image of Hangaku, letting down her hair and donning a breastplate (known as ‘Haramaki’ in Japanese), which captured the essence of her strength and unique approach to warfare.
